Women’s athletics: Grosse breaks pole vault record and ranks 19th in Division III

River Falls, Wisconsin – The Macalester College women’s track and field team traveled to River Falls, Wisconsin to compete in the UW-River Falls Falcon Invite. The Scots came in behind Bethel and host UW-River Falls.

Senior Hannah Fat (Minneapolis, Minn./Coon Rapids) won the pole vault with a score of 3.60m (11′ 9.75″). That breaks Macalester’s school record of 3.43m (11 ‘ 3″) that Grosse established last year at the MIAC Outdoor Championships. The performance also exceeds his indoor record mark of 3.46 meters (11’ 4.25″) from earlier this year. Grosse’s mark now ranks 19e in Section III.

Also in the field, second year Sarah Beth Hobbies (South Pittsburg, Tenn./St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School) finished second in the javelin throw. Junior Amundson Travel (Iron River, Wis./Northwestern) recorded a mark of 5.17 meters (16′ 11.5″), ranking third. Coming just behind Amundson was senior Mikaïla Ennevor (Wayzata, Minn./Breck School) with a 5.11 meter (16′ 9.25″) mark.

Second year Maria Blaesing (Munster, Ind./Munster) led the Scots down the track with a first-place finish in the 800 meters. Blaesing’s time of 2:20.92 is a personal best. Senior Lena Stern (Seattle, Wash./Garfield) also set a personal best in the 800 meters (2:23.26) finishing just behind Blaesing. Second year Karley Thurston (Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) and junior Madeleine Rodriguez (Petaluma, Calif./Marin Academy) also made the top 10 of the 800.

The first year 4×400 meters relay team Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, MN/Eden Prairie), junior Sara Gregoire (Bloomington, Minn./The Blake School), Blaesing and Grosse took second place while the team of Rodriguez, Stern, Thurston and freshman Meira Smith (Colfax, Wis./Memorial) came third. In the 4×100 meter relay, Macalester’s team of Hobby, Amundson and sophomores Penelope Hunter (Granville, Ohio/Granville) and Yinka Saba (Elk Grove Village, Illinois) came in third.

The next competition for the Scots will be the Tomcat Twilight hosted by St. Thomas on Wednesday, April 13 at 4:00 p.m.
